Specimen Requirements:    
Two air-dried, unfixed, unstained buffy coat slides or whole blood in EDTA
Collection Protocol:    
Prepare buffy coat slides by centrifuging whole blood in 1-2 hematocrit tubes for 5 minutes (10-15 minutes for sheep/goats).  Retrieve the buffy coat by scoring and breaking the hematocrit tube(s) just below the buffy coat zone.  Gently spread cells in the buffy coat onto glass slides by blood smear technique.  Alternately, whole blood collected in EDTA tube(s) may be submitted for retrieval of the buffy coat by the lab.
Shipping Requirements:    
Ship slides in plastic or styrofoam slide containers.  Whole blood should be refrigerated.  Overnight shipping for whole blood samples is recommended. 
Additional Information:    
Whole blood samples over 48 hours old may result in poor cellular integrity and rupture making differential counts and identification of abnormalities difficult or impossible to interpret.
