Affected areas of hair, scab, skin; beaks, claws, feathers, toenails are also acceptable. Swabs are not suitable for culturing dermatophytes. Sufficient material should be submitted to perform a KOH exam.
Specimen should be taken after first cleaning the area with 70% alcohol or a non-medicated, non-fungicidal soap. Specimen may be obtained by plucking hair with scabs, scraping nail bed or skin with scalpel blade
Submit in a dry container such as a red top tube, Whirl-Pak® or Ziploc® bags. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Overnight or 2-day shipping for samples recommended
*Turn around time for a dermatophyte culture is a minimum of 14 days for a negative (no growth) to 30 days for a positive. Care should be taken obtaining specimen(s) as common zoophilic dermatophytes can infect humans.
