| Swab of abscess, external ear, nasal, tracheal wash, tissue or open wound; Submitting sufficient material increases the likelihood of recovery of fungal species. |
| Collection Protocol: |
|
|
| Obtain culture swab of external ear, open wounds, uterine swab, etc. External specimens should be taken after first cleaning the area with 70% alcohol or a non-medicated, non-fungicidal soap. Collect tissues aseptically. |

| Submit in a sterile container such as a red top tube, Whirl-Pak® or Ziploc® bags. Do not freeze. Overnight or 2-day shipping is recommended |

| *Turn around time is dependent upon typical pathogen expected or requested as some fungi may take more than 4 weeks to isolate and identify. Note on submission form if systemic fungi (histoplasmosis, blastomycosis or coccidioidomycosis) are suspected. Histology is recommended for these cases rather than culture. |
