Specimen Requirements:    
Samples may be an entire carcass, an intact head, or dissected brain tissue.  Dissected brain tissue must include a complete cross section of the brain stem and cerebellum preferably or, if cerebellum is unavailable, brain stem and hippocampus are acceptable.  Rabies Testing and Shipping Protocol
Collection Protocol:    
Collect appropriate samples as indicated above; submit sample(s) triple bagged and packaged to prevent contamination of the outside of the package and cross-contamination of contents within the package.
Shipping Requirements:    
Refrigerated, leak proof containers.  Overnight shipping is recommended 
Additional Information:    

This laboratory tests only non-human contact animal cases and human contact cases as approved by state public health practitioners at the Oregon State Public Health Lab and various county health departments around Oregon and Washington.  Testing cannot be completed in human contact cases without prior approval.

*Effective 1/1/12 - Disposal fees will be charged for whole animals submitted for rabies testing.  Small mammals - $5.00; Ag animals, cats/dogs, horses, llama/alpacas, and wildlife < 300 lbs = $20.00.  Ag animals, horses and wildlife >300 lbs = $40.00.  Bats are not subject to the disposal fee.
