Specimens are screened for the Influenza Matrix protein gene. The matrix gene is found in all Influenza Type A viruses. This test has been demonstrated to detect Avian, Canine, Equine and Swine Influenza Type A viruses including, H5N1, H3N8, H3N2 and H1N1. Result is for the matrix gene only, indicating whether or not an Influenza Type A virus is detected in the specimen. Subtyping assays (H1, H3, N1, N2) may be requested, but have not been validated for canine specimens. A fee of $35.75 is added for subtyping of matrix gene positive specimens.
