Fresh feces - 5 grams
To detect the presence of lungworm larvae feces must be very fresh, collected directly form the animal's rectum or from very fresh droppings to eliminate extraneous soil organisms. Do not submit in latex gloves or OB sleeves.
The Baermann procedure on fresh feces can detect larvae of the meningeal worm of white-tailed deer. If older feces are used, larvae of strongyles and non-pathogenic nematodes may be found while lungworm larvae (and meningeal worm) may no longer be present.
