Deep nasal swab, transtracheal wash, lung
Collect nasal swabs into dry sterile tubes(synthetic swab - avoid wooden or paper shafts). NO Q-TIPS. Tubes should not contain anticoagulant or gel; plain red-top vacutainer tubes work well. Place transtracheal wash or tissue into sterile, leak-proof containers. Keep specimens refrigerated. NOTE: If culture is desired, submit a duplicate swab in the appropriate bacterial transport media.
Specimens are screened for the Influenza Matrix protein gene. This Matrix gene is found in all Influenza Type A viruses. This test has not been fully validated in all species, however it has been demonstrated to detect Avian, Canine, Equine and Swine Influenza Type A viruses including, H5N1, H3N8 and H1N1. Please reference Influenza A Virus testing
