Serum, blood-swab, EDTA blood, lung, spleen, lymph node or tonsil tissue
Collect 1-5 g tissue or at least 0.5 ml serum (removed from clot) into sterile containers. If using a serum separator tube, please centrifuge prior to shipment.
For blood-swab, completely soak swab with fresh blood and place into a sterile tube (break off shaft) containing several drops of sterile saline or PBS. Just enough to cover the swab tip, not the shaft. A sufficient amount of blood can be obtained by using a 20 gauge needle to nick an ear vein, or while ear notching young pigs.
To prevent PCR inhibition:
Use synthetic swabs (Dacron or Polyester) with a plastic or wire shaft.
DO NOT USE COTTON SWABS (NO Q-TIPS) or swabs with wooden or paper shafts. Do not use swabs that contain gel or calcium alginate.
This real-time RT-PCR assay detects both the European (EU) and North American (NA) subtypes of PRRSV. Results for each subtype are reported.
