Swabs in transport media, fluid or abscess material in sterile tubes, tissues in individual sterile bags
Aseptically obtained specimen. Abscess material or swab best obtained from close to interior wall of abscess with bloody material to increase likelihood of obtaining live organisms. Nasal swabs or wash; gutteral pouch endoscopic lavage or swab.
This test is recommended to confirm live organisms in a PCR positive animal, for screening when introducing a new animal or for outbreak control monitoring. If other organisms, including other steptococci, are suspected, a routine Aerobic or Anaerobic culture must be requested. Sensitivities are not performed on this test. Strep equi ssp. equi remains sensitive to penicillin and it is the drug-of-choice.
