Fresh feces, intestinal contents or a tied-off loop of intestine. Biopsy sample of affected tissue.
A transport swab is less desirable unless it is specifically designed for anaerobes.
Fresh sample collected in water-tight sealed container. Glove or OB sleeves are not acceptable.
Swab may be taken of affected area such as gangrenous tissue.
This test is only to detect or rule-out Clostridium perfringens. Request aerobic and anaerobic cultures if other organisms may be suspected.
A positive culture may be sent for C. perfringens PCR toxin genotyping on request for an additional fee. This combination may be selected as part of the Ruminant Diarrhea/Scours Panel.
