Nasal swab (preferred specimen), EDTA blood
Collect nasal swabs (flocked swab or Dacron tipped swab with plastic or wire shaft) in dry sterile tubes without anticoagulant or gel; plain red-top tube works well. Flocked swabs are preferred. Keep specimens refrigerated.
Specimen collection from suspect EHV or EHM case (live horse with clinical disease):
The EHV real-time PCR Panel includes screening for EHV-1 and EHV-4 viruses. If EHV-1 DNA is detected, the specimen will be further tested using the EHV-1 allelic discrimination real-time PCR assay. The EHV-1 allelic discrimination PCR assay will differentiate between wild type (non-neurotropic) and the neurotropic genotypes, also referred to as the N752 or A2254 genotype (non-neuropathogenic allele) and the D752 or G2254 genotype (neuropathogenic allele). http://vetmed.oregonstate.edu/sites/vetmed.oregonstate.edu/files/main/perkins_et_al_2009_ehv-1_retrospective_study.pdf
PCR testing of non-symptomatic, exposed horses is NOT recommended. Submit serum samples for testing non-symptomatic horses for exposure to the EHV viruses and request EHV-1 and EHV-4 serology
*Fee is $56.75 per specimen for the first 3 specimens, each additional specimen from the same herd at the same time is $49.50
**A fee of $40.00 will be assessed for all STAT requests.
