One or more of the following: tracheal swab, oropharyngeal swab, oral swab, 1-2 mL tracheal wash, 1 g fresh trachea.
Place swab in a sterile, leak-proof container (e.g. red top tube), may submit dry or with a few drops of saline or viral transport media. Do not submit swabs in tubes containing gel, Amies media or media containing charcoal. Cotton swabs on wooden shafts are not suitable for PCR testing. Submit synthetic swabs on plastic or wire shafts.
Detection of influenza type A (matrix gene). Detects, but does not differentiate subtypes H3N8, H3N2, H5N1, H1N1, etc., by real time PCR. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. Same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day.
