From the age of five, Dr. Erickson knew she wanted to be a veterinarian. She grew up in the beautiful seaside town of Kailua, Hawaii. They always had golden retrievers in the home. They were the best family dogs and beach companions, and they taught her just how powerful the human-animal bond can be. With her sights set on a career in veterinary medicine, she attended Colorado State University for undergraduate and veterinary school. Following vet school, she completed a one-year rotating internship at Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital, a one-year surgical internship at the University of Florida and a three-year small animal surgical residency at The Ohio State University. She then returned to CSU’s Animal Cancer Center for a fellowship in surgical oncology. This was followed by a one year clinical instructorship position at CSU where she shared time between the surgical oncology and soft tissue surgery departments and contributed to the development of the new competency based veterinary education (CBVE) surgical curriculum.

During her residency and clinical instructorship, she also completed a master’s in biomedical education with a research focus in performance stress and learning. She is now an assistant professor in soft tissue surgery and surgical oncology at Oregon State University. Her research and career interests include fluorescence guided imaging, intraoperative margin assessment, advancing the field of surgical oncology, and veterinary student surgical education. Dr. Erickson has chosen a career in academia to continue providing advanced oncologic and soft tissue surgeries, contribute to cutting edge research and take part in creating the best training programs possible for residents, interns and veterinary students.

When she’s not working, she loves exploring Oregon with her husband, Zak. They love anything outdoors whether it’s skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping, horseback riding, paddleboarding, exploring the coast or spending time with friends and family. They currently have one cat, a perfect calico princess named Mele, and they hope to adopt more pets in the near future.
