Eleven years ago, we went to a shelter to pick up a young terrier rescue we had seen online. As was their practice, she had been brought in from a shelter in California and fostered for six weeks before being offered for adoption. As we were waiting, another little dog came in, right from the airplane. He was quite sick and weighed only 4 lbs, which turned out to be half of his adult weight. We said, we'll take him too. That was the start of our life with Dexter, a charming, silly, stubborn little fellow who never let his small size stop him. Friendly to strangers and large dogs, he loved to play fight and competed with our terrier rescue for attention but he adored her and followed her around as well. When the vet told us that he had a cancerous tumor in his cheek, we hoped it would not progress swiftly but it did, and over several months his health severely deteriorated. He passed away several days ago. We will always remember him.
