Kitty

When I moved to Oregon in 2006, my previous partner and I found a kitty in a small pet shop near where we moved. She was in a kennel with her brother. I still regret not getting her brother too. They were in a cramped little cage, but we brought kitty home. She is the tiniest kitten I’ve ever seen. She used to climb the window screens and yell at us when we were outside. She grew into quite a cat who liked to chase milk rings and play with them. She often went into Halloween cat mode and jumped at me. She really preferred my ex-partner over me, but in the end, I got her. She offered me immense comfort during our time together. When I met my husband, she came with me, along with my dog Betty. She spent the last ten years in our small house in Oregon City, lying in the sunshine from the windows and occasionally getting chased by Betty. Seven years ago, she was diagnosed with kidney disease. My husband and I thought it was the end for her, but she kept going strong until a month ago, when she declined rapidly. She had lost a lot of weight, became skin and bones, and wasn’t making it to the litter box anymore. The day she passed will stay in my heart forever. I held my aging kitty who had shared so much of her life with me, until she took her last breath. Watching her slip away is something I’ll never forget. I will meditate on my love for that little kitty until the end of my days.
