A Tribute to Kya Mae Alexander
In the tapestry of our lives, each thread represents a moment, a memory, a piece of our hearts. Kya Mae’s thread was brindle, interwoven with love, adventure, and a gentle spirit that warmed every corner of our home. From her earliest days, cradled in our palm as a pup rescued from a Tennessee shelter, to her serene final moments under the clear November sky, Kya was a beacon of light, love, and loyalty. Her life was a canvas of exploration, colored by her inherent curiosity—a gift from her feline siblings who raised her with a sense of wonder.
Kya’s spirit was too vast for solitude, which led us to share our every day with her, from the hum of office life to the quiet evenings at home. Her companionship was as essential to us as the air we breathed. As she matured, Kya's world blossomed with the arrival of our daughter. With innate grace, she stepped into the role of protector and playmate, her presence a comforting constant for our little one. She was the silent strength behind our daughter’s first steps and the watchful eyes that followed her with every giggle and sprint. The holidays were a special chapter in Kya’s story. Her joy was pure and palpable, her spirit in beautiful synchrony with the season's mirth. She waited, with the patience of the saints, for the rustle of wrapping paper and the chorus of laughter that would fill the room. Her restraint before the gifts—a reflection of her deep bond with us, always awaiting shared moments.
As years added wisdom to her gaze, Kya encountered life’s sterner tests. It was then that First City Veterinary Hospital extended their care and expertise, ensuring her days remained filled with the same zest and comfort she had always known. The compassion they showed Kya was a testament to the impact she had on all who knew her. We are eternally thankful for the additional years they gave us with our beloved companion, years that were a gift not just to us, but to everyone who found joy in Kya’s greeting. Kya's story is not just one of a pet and her family or the many adventures together; it's a tale of mutual guardianship, of lessons learned, and of love that transcends the physical presence. Her legacy is stitched into the fabric of our lives, in the hearts she touched with every wag of her tail, and in every act of kindness she inspired.
The thoughtfulness of the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University in sending us a card to honor Kya’s memory is a balm to our hearts. And to First City Veterinary Hospital, whose donation in Kya’s name will help nurture future veterinarians, we offer our deepest gratitude. This gesture ensures that Kya’s legacy will extend far beyond the trails she roamed, the mountains she climbed, and the waters she paddled—it will live on in the compassionate care provided to countless other companions.
In the quiet that now fills our home, we listen for the echo of Kya’s steps, the soft nudge of her nose, the unwavering devotion in her eyes. And in this stillness, we find strength, knowing that her story—a tale of love, loyalty, and the purest joy—will be shared, remembered, and cherished, just as she cherished every day with us.
Rest easy baby girl.
Love,
Your Family
