Shamus aka "Shameless" aka "The Shame" aka 'Famous Shamus" went peacefully to the rainbow bridge yesterday. Before he left, I told him to go "find" Ron Gaunt who will play his favorite game, Nosework, for eternity.
It was a snowy day on Jan 1st, 2004 that I picked up my little guy, sight unseen, from the breeder's friend in Vancouver WA. From that day forward, you changed my life. From day 1 you were a smart and fast learner, hungry, bold and eager to try new things.
You were never an obedient dog - you did what you wanted, when you wanted. And that suited your personality. A little white fluffy dog you were NOT! You were a working dog through and through.
For the first several years, we dabbled in agility, tricks, musical freestyle, and barn hunt. But it wasn't until Nosework came to Portland in 2010, that we both knew you had found your niche. Because for the first time, you were telling me what to do. ... and that suited you just fine!
We played the game and competed for the next 8 years, traveling throughout the Pacific Northwest, Vancouver Canada, California, Colorado and even to Texas to compete in the higher level trials. You retired last year just shy of your Elite 3 title....and I am so proud of you! We did one last easy search before it was time to leave, and I watched as your "aimless" walk turned into purpose when you were in odor.... and my heart soared when you managed to eat the treat, after 2 days of not wanting to eat at all.
You taught me so much and you leave an empty hole in my heart. I will miss you my little big man...forever in my heart...until we meet again buddy...run free.
