Toby was a Golden Retriever that passed on 02-12-2019 at 10 years old. He was diagnosed with bone cancer October 2018, and we felt lucky to have had him 4 1/2 months after his diagnosis due to care at OSU. We had hoped for longer, although Toby was such a special perpetual puppy that any extra time was a gift. He whined like a baby when he met new friends and quickly captured hearts. A friend gave him to us when he was 11 months old because of family living changes. We already had a female Golden Retriever named Lovey who thought she was a princess, and she made Toby work months for her attention. She thought he would go away, but he worked so hard to get her to play and finally his charms worked, and they became best friends. Toby taught us that Lovey was much smarter than we thought because she could easily get his toys, get his prized spot on the couch, and even convince him that he needed to go outside. He was devastated when we lost Lovey, as were we (she lived almost 15 years). He loved her so much. Fortunately (or not, LOL), we ended up with another dog when my daughter was having a baby, but it was a big change. It was a female chihuahua named Chloe who was on her third rescue. We were not convinced a little dog was for us, but Toby and Chloe quickly became best friends and could not be parted. She was only 6 lbs and he was 106 lbs; we had fun watching him play very gently with her. He was a determined, playful dog that had the will to persevere. I was and am so hopeful of the work that OSU is doing to help our best friends live longer. We are still quite heartbroken, but we know he is with his best friend Lovey and all his old and new friends that went before him in Doggie Heaven. Toby loved going to OSU; as far as you would know, he was going to doggie day care to meet new friends. This convinced me of how much they truly cared and how much they would try to help Toby. Toby left a trail of broken hearts in our local vet's office, and I am sure he did at OSU. He was just like that; we will miss our Baby Boy.
