Shipping Requirements
Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leakproof containers.
Specimen Requirements
Post-mortem - vascularized tissues (spleen, liver, kidney, heart, rumen, etc.), bone marrow; ante-mortem - EDTA blood or EDTA bone marrow
Collection Protocol
Ensure thorough mixing of blood in EDTA (e.g. invert tube several times immediately following collection) to prevent clotting. Clotted blood is not suitable for testing. Fill tube at least halfway to prevent PCR inhibition caused by excess EDTA.
Detection of bluetongue virus (BTV) and epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) by multiplex real time PCR. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. Same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day.
