Shipping Requirements
Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leak-proof containers.
Specimen Requirements
One or more of the following: nasal swab-(preferred specimen), 1-2 mL EDTA whole blood, 1 g each fresh tissue (lung, liver, kidney, spleen, brain, aborted fetal tissue, placental tissue).
Collection Protocol
For swab specimens: place in a sterile, leak-proof container (e.g. red top tube), may submit dry or with a few drops of saline or viral transport media. Do not submit swabs in tubes containing gel, Amies media or media containing charcoal. Cotton swabs on wooden shafts are not suitable for PCR testing. Submit synthetic swabs on plastic or wire shafts. For blood specimens: ensure thorough mixing of blood in EDTA (e.g. invert tube several times immediately following collection) to prevent clotting. Clotted blood is not suitable for testing. Fill tube at least halfway to prevent PCR inhibition caused by excess EDTA.
Detection of equine herpesvirus (EHV-1) and differentiation between neuropathogenic vs. non-neuropathogenic (respiratory / wild type) strains by real time PCR. Test performed Monday-Friday. Typical turnaround is 1-2 days.
