Shipping Requirements
Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leak-proof containers. Do not submit specimens in gloves.
Specimen Requirements
One or more of the following: 2-3 g feces, 1 mL intestinal content, 1-2 g fresh intestine.
Collection Protocol
Specimens are pooled by the lab in groups of 5 prior to testing. Submit labeled individual fecal specimens; if a pool tests positive, individual samples within the pool will be retested for an additional fee. Fresh samples provide the most accurate results. Do not submit feces in gloves.
Pooled testing for detection of Mycobacterium avium ssp. paratuberculosis, the causative agent of Johne's disease, by real time PCR, following the protocol approved by the USDA. Up to 5 samples are pooled. This is a reportable disease and the State Veterinarian will be notified of positive results.
