Shipping Requirements
Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leak-proof containers.
Specimen Requirements
One or more of the following: 1-2 mL EDTA whole blood, 1-5 mL urine, 1 g fresh tissue (kidney, liver, placenta).
Collection Protocol
Ensure thorough mixing of blood in EDTA (e.g. invert tube several times immediately following collection) to prevent clotting. Clotted blood is not suitable for testing. Submit urine in a sealed leakproof container (i.e., 15 ml tube with screw top lid or empty red top tube (no additives).
Detection of Leptospira spp. by real time PCR; species / serovar discrimination is not included. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. Same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day.
