Shipping Requirements
Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leak-proof containers. Do not submit specimens in gloves.
Specimen Requirements
Minimum 5 g fresh feces or intestinal contents.
Collection Protocol
Collect specimens aseptically into individual sterile, leak proof containers and label with permanent marker. Do not submit samples in gloves or OB sleeves. Fresh samples provide the most accurate results. Feces should be no more than 3 days old at time of receipt in laboratory. Do not freeze feces. Avoid animal bedding, or feces that have been outside for more than a few hours.
Detection of Bovine coronavirus, Bovine rotavirus-group A, Cryptosporidium spp, E. coli-K99, and Salmonella sp. by real time PCR. Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. FA test, and parasite oocyst/ova count by Sugar centrifugation/ Stoll's test. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. For PCRs, same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m.Salmonella PCR testing requires overnight incubation in broth media prior to testing. No same day testing is available. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day. The E. coli-K99 PCR assay is specific for detection of the K99+ antigen and will not detect other strains of E. coli. The Bovine Rotavirus PCR assay is specific for Group A rotaviruses and will not detect other common rotaviruses (i.e., Group B, commonly detected in sheep and goats).
