Label all samples. Ship overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Submit specimens in sealed leak-proof containers.
Specimen Requirements
One or more of the following: nasal swab, 1 g fresh lung.
Collection Protocol
Preferred: submit swab in 1 ml BHI broth or viral transport media. If media is not available, place in a sterile, leak-proof container (e.g. red top tube) with a few drops of sterile saline; do not submit swabs dry. Do not submit swabs in tubes containing gel, Aimes media or media containing charcoal. Cotton swabs on wooden shafts are not suitable for PCR testing. Submit synthetic swabs on plastic or wire shafts.
Detection of the swine influenza virus matrix gene by real time PCR. All specimens testing positive for the IAV-S Matrix gene will be further tested to determine subtype. Test also available as part of the Porcine Respiratory PCR Panel.
