Shipping Requirements
Label all samples with unique identifiers. For multiple samples, number bags, containers or tubes consecutively using a permanent marker or adhesive label. Include a list of sample names/numbers with submittal form. Ship overnight with cold packs Monday-Thursday only. Blood: EDTA (purple top) tube, heparin (green top) tube. Semen: leak proof tubes or straws. Fresh tissue, feces, fluids or swabs: sealed, leak-proof plastic bag or container. Do not submit samples in gloves.
Specimen Requirements
One or more of the following: 2-5 g Fresh tissue, 0.5-1 mL Semen, 5-10 mL EDTA Whole blood, Swabs from affected area(s), other samples as deemed appropriate by submitter and/or professional staff. Contact the lab for further sampling questions if needed.
Collection Protocol
Fresh samples provide the most accurate results. Swabs in gel media are not appropriate for virus isolation. Swabs can be collected and placed in a clean, sterile tube such as red top Blood collection Tube. Blood collected in EDTA (purple top tube) or heparin (green top tube), mixing blood well at time of collection to prevent clotting of Whole blood.
Isolation and identification of various viruses using cell culture methods. Appropriateness of this test will be determined by OVDL Virology section based on species and virus. For species not listed contact the laboratory. Typical turnaround time is 14-21 days, but testing may take longer for confirmation.
