Canine Total Hip Replacement

Back to the life they love with total hip replacement

Hip dysplasia and arthritis can steal a dog's comfort, mobility and joy. When medication and rehabilitation are no longer enough, a total hip replacement removes the diseased joint and replaces it with a durable artificial hip, eliminating the source of pain and restoring natural movement.

Oregon State University's THR program uses the KYON Zurich Cementless hip, a Swiss-engineered implant that has been used in more than 20,000 dogs worldwide over the last 20 years. The implant is fixed with locking screws and allows bone to grow into it, giving a stable, long-lasting joint for small to giant breed dogs.

The program is led by Dr. Shanti Jha, board-certified orthopedic surgeon, and supported by the full specialty team at the Lois Bates Acheson Veterinary Teaching Hospital, bringing this advanced procedure to families across the Pacific Northwest.

Can THR help my dog?

THR can help dog breeds of any size and may be a good option for the following conditions.*

  • Hip dysplasia with painful arthritis.
  • Chronic hip pain or lameness despite medication and rehab.
  • Selected hip fractures and other hip joint disease.

*A consultation with X-rays confirms whether your dog is a good candidate.

Why the KYON hip?

  • Cementless: locking screws give immediate, stable fixation, and bone grows into the implant.
  • Low-wear materials: titanium, a ceramic head and a high-performance polymer cup.
  • Proven: more than 20,000 dogs treated worldwide over 20 years; now in its sixth generation.
