One or more of the following: nasal swab-(preferred specimen), 1-2 mL EDTA whole blood, 1 g each fresh tissue (lung, liver, kidney, spleen, brain, fetal tissue, placental tissue).

Collection Protocol:

For swab specimens: place in a sterile, leak-proof container (e.g. red top tube), may submit dry or with a few drops of saline or viral transport media. Do not submit swabs in tubes containing gel, Amies media or media containing charcoal. Cotton swabs on wooden shafts are not suitable for PCR testing. Submit synthetic swabs on plastic or wire shafts. For blood specimens: ensure thorough mixing of blood in EDTA (e.g. invert tube several times immediately following collection) to prevent clotting. Clotted blood is not suitable for testing. Fill tube at least halfway to prevent PCR inhibition caused by excess EDTA.

Detection and differentiation of equine herpesvirus 1 & 4 . Includes follow-up testing for differentiation of neuropathogenic vs. non-neuropathogenic (respiratory / wild type) strains, if EHV-1 is detected. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. Same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day.
