Shipping Requirements: 
Label all samples. Ship tissues / blood overnight with cold packs in an insulated container. Ship frozen mosquitoes with dry ice. Use shipping boxes provided for 2 ml tubes. Contact lab if you need boxes. Ship Monday-Thursday only. Tissue or swabs: sealed, leak-proof plastic bag or container.Blood: EDTA (purple top) tube. Mosquitos: plastic 2 ml tube labeled with a barcode if available.
Specimen Requirements: 

Mammals: fresh brain/spinal cord. Avian: EDTA whole blood, 1g fresh tissue (liver, spleen, kidney, bone marrow, brain, heart), oral swabs (preferably applied to an FTA card).

Collection Protocol: 

Lesions should be identified and excised from fresh brain/spinal cord by a pathologist. Avian: note that oral swabs are not appropriate for all bird species such as raptors. Oral swabs are recommended for corvidae only (i.e., ravens, crows, jays).

Additional Information: 

Detection of West Nile virus by real time PCR. Whole mosquitoes should be pooled & identified prior to submission, 50 insects to a vial; no identification is available in the lab. Test performed Monday-Friday. Typical turnaround is 2-3 days. Test is available as STAT if requested, for an additional fee. Same day results provided for STAT specimens submitted before 10:00 a.m. Results for STAT specimens submitted after 10:00 a.m. receive priority status and are reported as soon as they are available, at least by the following business day.
