We were lucky enough to find Duke, who had been abandoned in our compound, while we were expats in Vietnam back in March of 2016. We had only been living there for a couple of months, and Duke was the perfect addition to our family while we were experiencing all of the ups and downs of transitioning to living in a foreign country. We always say he rescued us, not the other way around. From the moment he met Barry, Barry became his alpha. He was sweet, loyal, playful, loved laying in the sun, and knowing all of the comings and goings of the kids' friends and whoever else stopped by our house. Duke lavished in people's attention, and when we made the move back to Oregon in 2019, he loved going to the dog parks more so for the love and attention of the dog owners, and not the other dogs. Duke was a special dog in so many ways. He "talked to us" through his constant moans and groans, he protected us in his own way, he managed our little blind wiener dog patiently and as a guide when on walks, and he eventually fell into the role of being a constant near anyone who was home. As Duke became ill with his soft tissue sarcoma, his tail never stopped wagging and he never skipped the chance for a walk or car ride to the dog park. His ears perked up to the treat jar, and he sat proud and tall on his last day for every last pet and hug. He will forever remain a part of our family, and our house is not the same without him. RIP Duke. We love you!!!
