Pepe was a cat like no other. Defying every stereotype of the aloof and disinterested cat, Pepe was incredibly social and always wanted to be with his people. Whether it was on the prowl for snacks and pets at a BBQ, watching and disrupting backyard golf, or making sure my watering was up to his standards, he wanted to be a part of it.

Originally taken in off the streets by my neighbor in Portland, Pepe was not shy about crawling under the fence and introducing himself to me and my roommates. It wasn't long before he had claimed our yard as part of his territory and he became a regular guest. When my neighbor had to move away and was unable to take him, it was the easiest decision I've ever made when she hesitantly asked if I would consider taking him.

The 14 years since, where Pepe was officially my responsibility, were a blessing for us both. After a move to Bend in 2013, Pepe enjoyed an increase in dry days and a more four-season experience. From the first sunny day of spring through the last moderately warm day of fall, he enjoyed hanging out in the confines of his backyard as much as possible. During the winter he was happy to be able to channel his Nordic roots playing in fresh snow. When he wasn't able to be in his yard or the weather wasn't to his liking, he was usually happily snoozing away in one of his many cozy spots, or hanging out with me demanding attention or snacks.

While Pepe will be greatly missed, he lived his best life through his final years, and I'm glad to have been able to provide that for him. I'm very grateful to everyone at Colorado Cat Clinic in Bend for the care they provided over the years and for helping me provide Pepe with the final days he deserved. I'm also grateful for all the future vets out there. Thanks for all work you will go on to do!
