Dark brown dog sitting outside

After returning from my second deployment in 2011, my friend told me that I needed a dog because he was worried if I didn't have something to love who would love me unconditionally back, that I would take my life. Cappie was on petfinder.com; he'd been displaced from his family as a puppy during a tornado & was being kept with a foster family. I had Cappie for 11.5 years living in seven different states & traveling the length of the US several times over. He was America's dog & he was loved by all who met him. He inspired & supported hundreds of military veterans throughout his years of service to me & others. He had a gnarly smile that terrified everyone who didn't know him; the happier he was to see you, the more terrifying his smile became. I was deployed again, #4, when Cappie took his final breath but thankfully, he wasn't alone. My childhood friend & her family were with him as he crossed the rainbow bridge.
