Dr. Stacy Semevolos has over 20 years experience in the field of comparative sports medicine and orthopedics, focusing on musculoskeletal disease, osteochondrosis and articular cartilage development of horses.  Her studies explore molecular expression changes in osteochondrosis, a disease of young fast-growing horses, including two funded by the American Quarter Horse Foundation.  She is also interested in orthopedic diseases affecting llamas and alpacas, including suspensory apparatus breakdown (dropped fetlocks) and the use of platelet rich plasma in treating ligament and joint injuries, with several studies funded by the Northwest Camelid Foundation.

Biography

Dr. Stacy Semevolos is a veterinary surgeon specializing in large animal surgery, equine lameness and equine sports medicine. Dr. Semevolos grew up in the Midwest and graduated from the University of Illinois with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree in 1994.  She initially honed her skills in private practice, including Rochester Equine Clinic in Rochester, NH and New Mexico Equine in Albuquerque, NM.  She then embarked on a residency in Large Animal Surgery at Cornell University, earning her Master of Science degree in 2000 and becoming board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2001.

Since joining Oregon State University’s faculty in 2002, Dr. Semevolos has delved into research focusing on comparative orthopedics, where she explores articular cartilage development and osteochondrosis in horses. She has a special interest in equine lameness, joint diseases, and rehabilitation and became board certified in Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (Equine) in 2016.  She currently holds the position of Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and Graduate Programs. She and her husband Randy enjoy showing their Belgian draft horses in pulling competitions.
